Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are critical to the success of Benton County Canine Shelter, and our volunteer team is comprised of scores of animal lovers who are committed to improving the lives of animals in our community. Volunteers allow us to stretch our resources, expand our programs, and help us to save more lives. The volunteering of your time and energy to Benton County Canine Shelter can be both rewarding and emotionally fulfilling; not to mention extremely helpful to the facility staff and the animals we serve. Please note that you MUST be 18 years old to volunteer with us.

Donate Your Time at Benton County Canine Shelter

There are numerous ways that you can help at the facility. You can assist in the following:

Provide a warm and friendly welcome to visitors to Benton County Canine Shelter, directing them to the appropriate area of the facility and answering questions.

Dog Walking & Animal Care

Help to increase the adoptability of the dogs in our care by working with specific, positive reinforcement techniques to encourage them to display desired behaviors. Volunteers are trained to encourage the dogs to focus, sit, and walk well on leash while working with dogs during exercise and socialization time.  This can be a very physical, outdoor job and many of the dogs are untrained.  Some experience with dogs is helpful as the facility takes in many different breeds and sizes of dogs.  Volunteers should have basic knowledge of dog behavior and be able to safely handle dogs at all times.

Adoption Promotion Assistance

Help our animals find loving and permanent adoptive homes by promoting the animals to potential adopters. Volunteers take digital photos and write up fun descriptions of the animals so they can put their best paw forward on internet adoption sites. Volunteers take the photos here using the facility camera, but can upload the content from home or the facility.

Lost Pet Assistance

Help members of the public looking for lost pets by maintaining printouts of all animals held in the facility, escorting visitors to stray-hold areas to look for possible matches, and compare lost & found reports at the facility, in the newspaper and on the internet to help reunite lost companion animals with their families.  Volunteers must have good communication skills and the ability to provide high quality customer service.

Off-Site Adoptions and Transfers

Off-site adoptions may be held at various locations in the community.  Volunteers may be needed to transport the animals and appropriate paperwork to the site and then afterwards return the animals to the facility.
