Light Bulbs

LightRecycle Washington

Consumer demand for energy-efficient lighting led to a boom in sales of compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). While these lights were undoubtedly much more efficient than standard incandescent bulbs, they had a major drawback in that they contained the element mercury (Hg). Mercury is poisonous and requires specialized disposal in order to protect the public and the environment.

As of January 1, 2015, Washington state residents have been able to recycle mercury-containing lights at no charge. In addition to CFLs, collection sites throughout the state take fluorescent tubes (such as office lighting) and high intensity discharge (HID) lights. Each person may recycle up to ten (10) such lights per day. Please be advised that only the lighting apparatus itself will be accepted. Mounting, light fixtures, and other appurtenances will not be accepted.
